Bangladesh secured their first points in the 2007 Asia Cup here on Monday
beating Sri Lanka 3-2 in a Pool B match. Both the teams were locked 1-1 at the
break.
For Sri Lanka it was their first match where they competed on an equal footing
and even after Bangladesh had taken a 3-1 lead, they fought back to cut the
scores to 2-3 and kept looking for an equalizer till the hooter signaled a
Bangladesh win.
Bangladesh took the lead in the 4th minute when Rasel Mahmud converted a penalty
corner.
After a midfield tussle for more then 25 minutes, Lanka, barely four minutes
before the break, found the equalizer after a counter-attack led to
Hettiarachchi moving into the striking circle to shoot past the Bangladesh
goalkeeper.
In the 46th minute, Md. Mamun converted a stroke to put Bangladesh ahead 2-1.
Three minutes later, in the 49th minute, Md. Zahidul Islam, flicked in a penalty
corner to enhance the lead to 3-1.
Lanka fought back to cut the scores in the 58th minute with Karunarathne finding
the target with a blistering penalty corner.
Bangladesh now have three points while Lanka searches for it’s first win in the
Pool and the Asia Cup.
